Awards 2015

  • Saba Ghazvini's, BioE doctoral student and BERC graduate research assistant, "Science to Art" image was chosen for display at the Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute Annual Dinner on September 30, 2015. Her work was put up for silent auction at the dinner, with proceeds benefiting STEAM education (STEM and the Arts) in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The theme of the KCALSI Annual Dinner was "Exponential Health: Solving Today's Problems with the Technologies of Tomorrow."
    • The artwork is associated with Ms. Ghazvini's article "Monitoring Phases and Phase Transitions in Phosphatidylethanolamine Monolayers using Active Interfacial Microrheology" in Soft Matter, 2015, 11, 3313.                                                                 
  • Nikki Galvis, Ph.D. BioE student, and Dr. Lisa Friis, Product Development Core Director, co-founded Evoke Medical.
    • In April, they won first place in the Design of Medical Devices Conference, Emerging Medical Innovation Valuation Competition in Minneapolis, MN.                 
    • They also took first place in the Society of Biomaterials Second Annual Business Plan Competition in Charlotte, NC.                                                     
  • Dr. Xueping Ge, Dr. Leon Song, Dr. Charles Ye, Dr. Anil Misra, and Dr. Paulette Spencer’s research is recognized by International Journal Macromolecular Chemistry and Physics with cover artwork for the April 2015 issue. The cover is associated with the researchers’ article, “Visible‐Light Initiated Free‐Radical/Cationic Ring‐Opening Hybrid Photopolymerization of Methacrylate/Epoxy: Polymerization Kinetics, Crosslinking Structure, and Dynamic Mechanical Properties.” Abstract.

 

 

 

  • Dr. Candan Tamerler, Bio-mediated and Biomimetic Materials Director, presented invited keynote addresses in Japan and Thailand during the summer semester.
  • Dr. Candan Tamerler, Bio-mediated and Biomimetic Materials Director, and her research team were featured on the covers of two international journals, Soft Matter and Macromolecular Rapid Communications.   • Dr. Jennifer Laurence, BioE faculty affiliate, was featured in KCPT's Cancer in KC, produced in conjunction with the PBS documentary Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies, which aired March 30-April 1, 2015.
  • Lance Frazer, Ph.D. BioE student, was awarded a Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellowship for 2015-2019.
  • Denise Bridwell, BioE Program Assistant (on the right), was named employee of the month for June 2015.

  • Dr. Paulette Spencer, BERC Director, was approved for sabbatical during Spring 2015 to travel to Brazil on a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award.
  • Dr. Paulette Spencer, BERC Director, became a Visiting Professor at Universidade Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP), Sao Jose dos Campos, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
  • Dr. Xinmai Yang, BioE faculty affiliate, was approved for sabbatical during Fall 2015.
