Dr. Beck is researching ways to improve treatment for those with arthritis. She's working on a designing a material to better integrate with the body (especially in the knee) and help in quicker, easier recovery.
Mr. Borrell is working on his joint M.S./Ph.D. in Biomedical and Bioengineering. He was a graduate research assistant for Dr. Yang. Currently, he is working as a graduate research assistant at the University of Kansas Medical Center in a lab working to help patients with spinal cord injuries to walk again.
Mr. Burris graduated with his B.S. in Biochemistry Spring 2015.
Dr. Dennis successfully defended his dissertation, Bone Defect Regeneration with Colloidal Gels and Native ECM Biomaterials, in early January 2015. He worked in Dr. Berkland's lab to design biomatierals and tissue engineering strategies for enhancing bone regeneration. Recently, he started as a Research Scientist with Orbis Biosciences. He has his B.S. in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering from the University of Kansas.
Mr. Domann earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Kansas; his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and his M.S. in Bioengineering, with honors. While working on his Master's, Mr. Domann was also a Fellow with the Institute for Advancing Medical Innovation. The Institute provided the grant for him to serve as a Senior Engineering Technician in Dr. Friis' Spine Biomechanics Laboratory. Currently, he is working towards his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at UCLA, where he is a graduate student researcher in the Active Materials Laboratory.
Mr. Dunaway served as a lab assistant while he worked towards his B.S. in chemistry.
Mr. Elandaloussi graduated with his B.S. in Chemical Engineering in Spring 2015.
Dr. Galvis graduated with her Ph.D. in Bioengineering Spring 2015. While at KU, she was awarded a Self Graduate Fellowship in 2011. That year Dr. Galvis also received a NSF Graduate Fellowship for her work on the effects of scoliosis on trunk motion. In 2013, she was honored as a KU Woman of Distinction and tied for first place at the KU Innovation Fair. Ms. Galvis has her B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Memphis.
Mr. Goetzinger was both a graduate teaching and research assistant while he worked towards his Master of Science in Bioengineering. He received his B.S. in Biological Systems Engineering from Kansas State University.
Ms. Haynes graduated with her B.S. in Biochemistry in Spring 2015. During her time at KU, she served as a research assistant in Drs. Spencer and Laurence's labs. Ms. Haynes begins her graduate program at Purdue Fall 2015.
Dr. Huang received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Kansas in 2011. While he was a student, he worked as a graduate research assistant for Dr. Mirsa. Now he is lecturer for the School of Civil Engineering & Transportation at South China University of Technology in the Tianhe District.
Dr. Jo graduated with his Ph.D. in Bioengineering Fall 2014. During his graduate studies, he served as a research assistant for Dr. Yang.
Dr. Khanlari graduated with honors in Summer 2014, earning her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering. While at KU she was a Graduate Research Assistant in Dr. Gehrke's Hydrogel lab. Her research interests include hydrogel and specialty polymers synthesis and characterization.
Mr. LaPierre earned both his Bachelor and Master degrees in Biomechanics Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kansas. He holds two patents for spinal therapy. While at KU, Mr. LaPierre was both a graduate research and teaching assistant. After graduating with distinction, he worked as a Senior R&D Engineer for Baxano Surgical. Currently, he is the marketing product manager for the Biomet Spine Lateral & Anterior product franchises.
Dr. Mannen graduated with her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering Fall 2014. Her research focused on understanding the biomechanics of the thoracic spine. She earned her Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kansas.
Dr. Lusk earned both her M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in civil engineering. During her time at KU, Dr. Lusk was both a graduate teaching and research assistant. She presented at several conferences and was published. Currently, Dr. Lusk works for Boeing as a Tool Engineer.
While working towards his doctorate in Civil Engineering, Dr. Marangos assisted Dr. Spencer as a graduate research assistant. Upon his graduation, he became a postdoctoral researcher with the BERC.
Mr. McDonald earned both his B.S. and M.S. from the University of Kansas in Mechanical Engineering, with an emphasis on machine design. During his time at KU, he served as a graduate research assistant in Dr. Kieweg's lab. He also taught laboratories for Mechanical Engineering classes 455 and 228. Since graduation, Mr. McDonald has worked for Garmin International as a Mechanical Engineer.
Ms. Melendez graduated with her Bioengineering M.S. in Spring 2015.
Dr. Mellott graduated with his doctorate in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine from KU's Bioengineering Program in 2014. While working on his doctorate, he served as both a graduate teaching and research assistant. As a student, Dr. Mellott was awarded a Fellowship from the National Science Foundation allowing him to travel to Japan for research. Currently, Dr. Mellott is a Post Doctoral Researcher for the University of Kansas.
Mr. Mucci graudated with his Master's in Chemical Engineering May 2015. He received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines.
Dr. Osaka received her Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Kansas. Her B.S. in Biochemistry is also from KU. While at KU, Dr. Osaka worked as both a graduate research and teaching assistant. Dr. Ott earned her Ph.D. in Biomaterials & Tissue Engineering Fall 2014. Her research focused on biomaterial synthesis and characterization. She was researching ways to provide new methods for surgeons looking help young patients with a narrowed airway. She designed a synthetic material that could replace rib cartilage as an option to expand the trachea for infants and toddlers with a narrowed airway. Dr. Ott is continuing her research as a postdoctoral researcher at KU Medical Center.
Dr. Paranjape was a Graduate Research Assistant in Dr. Chris Gamblin's research lab where they strive to understand the role of tau in Alzheimer's and other neuro degenerative disorders. Her projects included establishing Aspergillus nidulans as an in vivo model for studying tau protein aggregation and screening compounds for potential drug therapy against tauopathies.
While at the BERC, Dr. Parthasarathy served as both a Graduate Teaching Assistant and a Graduate Research Assistant. He won second place in the 2013 Graduate Engineering Division Sigma Xi Competition. The Sigma Xi competition requires a submission of a virtual research presentation, which is reviewed by leading career scientists. He graduated with his doctorate in August 2013. Currently, he is a Research Associate in the Department of Physics & Mathematics at Tennessee State University in Nashville.
Dr. Perea graduated with his Ph.D. in Bioengineering Spring 2015. While working towards his doctorate, Dr. Perea served as a Graduate Research Assistant managing and analyzing neuroimaging data. He earned his master's in Bioengineering & Biomedical Engineering and his bachelor's in Computer Engineering, both from the University of Kansas.
Ms. Riley won first place at the 2013 KU Center for Technology Commercialization Innovation Fair for her prototype of a medical safety device to prevent the spread of blood born diseases. She worked for Dr. Wilson as both a graduate research and teaching assistant, graduating with her M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 2014. She received her B.S. in Physics from Hendrix College. Currently, Ms. Riley is a Project Engineer for Global Control Systems Inc.
Dr. Singh was a Graduate Research Assistant at the BERC from January 2008 until he graduated with honors in June 2014. During this time, he was published in peer-reviewed journals more than a dozen times and presented at seven conferences. A month after obtaining his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Singh began working for the prestigious engineering firm Schlumberger Ltd as a Modeling & Simulation Engineer.
Dr. Sprouse earned her doctorate in Bioengineering in Spring 2014. She was a 2010-2014 Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellowship Recipient. Her research focused on synthesis and characterization of hybrid hydrogels for biomedical applications. Dr. Sprouse also has a M.S. in Marriage and Family with an emphasis in bioethics from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute in Rome, Italy. Her B.S. is in biomedical engineering from St. Louis University.
Dr. Sridharan assisted Dr. Detamore from August 2011 though July 2015. Her work has been more than published half a dozen times. Dr. Sridharan's research interests include tissue engineering, biomaterials, and cell printing. She received her bachelor of technology in bioengineering from SASTRA University.
Mr. Staley served as a graduate research assistant for Dr. Yang while he worked on his Bioengineering Master's degree. He graduated from KU with his M.S. in 2010, and since has been working towards his Ph.D. in Biomedical Photonics from the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Mr. Staley received his B.S. in Computer Engineering from KU.
Dr. Suekama earned her doctorate in 2013 in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering. She was part of Dr. Gehrke's research team, working to create and characterize novel hydrogels. Dr. Suekama mentored eight undergraduate students and three public school teachers. She obtained her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Colorado State University. Currently, Dr. Suekama is a Project Engineer for LC Therapeutics.
Mr. Sui graduated with his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 2014. While at KU, he worked as a graduate research assistant for Dr. Yang. His B.S. from Michigan Technological University, also in Mechanical Engineering.
Mr. Tobaben obtained both his Master and Bachelor degrees from the University of Kansas in Mechanical Engineering. While at KU, he assisted Dr. Friis' lab as a Graduate Research Assistant. Since graduating in May 2014, Mr. Tobaben has been employed by Garmin International as a Mechanical Engineer.
Mr. Tobaben earned both his Master and Bachelor of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kansas. During his time at KU, he worked as both a graduate teaching and research assistant. Mr. Tobaben holds a patent with five of his colleagues from that time. Currently, he is a Mechanical Engineer for Garmin International.
Ms. Zheng graduated with her Master's in Bioengineering from the University of Kansas in 2014. During her time at KU, she served as a research assistant in the BERC and the affiliated Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Lab. Ms. Zheng also coordinated research on a NIH grant for the Hoglund Brain Imaging Center at the KU Medical Center.
